Wix vs Hiring a Web Designer in Australia: The Honest Comparison
Wix isn't bad. For a very early-stage business with no budget, it's a reasonable starting point. But most business owners who've used it for a year or more end up frustrated — with the speed, the limitations, or just how much time they spend on it instead of their actual work. This is an honest comparison, not a sales pitch.
What Wix is good for
There are genuine use cases where Wix makes sense:
- Early-stage businesses with no budget. If you're pre-revenue and testing an idea, a free or cheap Wix site gets you a web presence without a significant upfront cost.
- Personal projects and hobbies. If the site doesn't need to generate leads or rank in search, Wix is perfectly fine.
- Temporary placeholders. Standing something up quickly while a proper site is being built is a legitimate use case.
- Very technically confident DIYers. If you genuinely enjoy building things and have time to invest, some people get solid results with Wix. Most business owners don't fall into this category.
Where Wix falls short for established businesses
Once your business is operational and the site is your primary lead source, Wix starts to show its limits:
- Slow page speeds. Wix sites consistently score 40–65 out of 100 on Google's PageSpeed test on mobile. A custom-built site on Cloudflare's global network typically scores 90+. Google uses page speed as a ranking factor. Slow sites rank lower and lose visitors before they even see your content.
- Template lock-in. Once you've built on a Wix template, you can't change templates without rebuilding the entire site from scratch. If your brand evolves, you're starting over.
- Platform dependency. Wix owns your site. You cannot export the design or the HTML. If Wix shuts down, gets acquired, or raises prices significantly, you have no options. A custom-built site means you own the files and can host them anywhere.
- The subscription never ends. Wix plans run $25–$50/month. After 3 years, that's $900–$1,800 with nothing to show for it — no asset, no equity in the site, just an ongoing fee for as long as you use it.
- It looks like a Wix site. Customers can tell. The font stacks, the layout patterns, the drag-and-drop uniformity — they're recognisable. That's not a dealbreaker, but it does cost you credibility points with some customers.
The real cost comparison over 3 years
Most people compare the upfront cost of Wix (free or cheap) against the upfront cost of a custom site ($1,500–$3,000) and conclude Wix is cheaper. The 3-year picture is different.
Wix — 3 years
~$900–$1,800 in subscriptions
Plus your time building and maintaining it. Plus the ongoing cost of a slow site that ranks lower and converts fewer visitors. At the end of 3 years, you own nothing — if you stop paying, the site disappears.
Custom site — 3 years
$1,500–$3,000 build + $1,200–$1,800 retainer
The total 3-year cost is similar — but you own the site, it performs better throughout, it ranks higher in local search, and you're not spending your time managing it. At the end of 3 years, you have an asset.
The maths is close. The performance difference isn't.
When to stick with Wix
There's no point moving to a custom site if the timing isn't right. Stick with Wix if:
- You're pre-revenue and genuinely don't have the budget for a build right now.
- You need something live this week and a custom build takes 2–3 weeks.
- The site is a temporary placeholder while you sort out other things.
- The site isn't your primary lead source and you're not relying on local search to bring in work.
These are real reasons. Don't let anyone — including me — make you feel like using Wix was a mistake if it got you through a lean period. It did its job.
When to move on
The right time to move to a custom site is when your Wix site is actively costing you business. Some signs that's happening:
- You've been operating for 12+ months and the site is your main way new customers find you.
- You're losing jobs to competitors with faster, more professional-looking sites.
- You've tried to make changes in Wix and found it frustrating or limiting.
- You've had any experience with Wix's customer support — and you'd rather not repeat it.
- You're spending time on the site each month that should be going into your business.
